SUMMARY:AYA Social Support Learning Community
DESCRIPTION:About This Session\nIn this first learning community session\, we’ll ground ourselves in findings from a national qualitative study exploring how AYA oncology programs evaluate patients’ social support needs. \n  \nNick Iannarino\, Associate Professor at University of Michigan–Dearborn\, will lead the discussion. He will present findings from qualitative interviews with 34 oncology professionals across 23 U.S. hospitals and AYA programs\, focused on three key research questions: \n\nHow clinicians define social support in AYA oncology\nHow social support is currently assessed in practice\nChallenges and opportunities to improve support assessment \n\n  \nWhat to Expect\nThis is a working session—not just a presentation. You’ll engage with the findings and with each other. \n\nStudy Insights (Grounding)\nPeer Reflection (Sense-Making)\nShared Understanding (Alignment)\n\nThis session sets the foundation for future learning community discussions—your perspective helps shape what comes next. \n  \nWho Should Attend\n\nAYA program leaders and coordinators \nOncologists\, nurses\, social workers\, psychologists\, navigators\, counselors\nResearchers studying AYA or psychosocial care\nAdvocates and nonprofit leaders

SUMMARY:AYA Social Support Learning Community - Assessing Social Support in Practice: Current Approaches\, Tools\, and Gaps
DESCRIPTION:About This Session\nIn this second learning community session\, we’ll take a deeper look at how AYA oncology programs currently assess patients’ social support needs\, and where assessment may not be occurring consistently. \nBuilding on findings shared by Nick Iannarino in Session 1\, we’ll explore the specific approaches clinicians and administrators use to understand patients’ support systems\, identify support needs\, and determine when intervention may be helpful. \nDr. Julie Germann\, Pediatric Psychologist at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas\, will lead the discussion. \nThe discussion will focus on Research Question 2 from a national qualitative study of 34 oncology professionals across 23 U.S. hospitals and AYA programs: \nHow are clinicians and administrators currently assessing AYA cancer patients’ social support needs within clinical practice (or not)? \nTogether\, we’ll examine: \n\nFormal and informal assessment approaches currently being used\nScreening tools\, workflows\, and documentation practices\nDifferences across institutions\, disciplines\, and care settings\n\nWhat to Expect\nThis is a working session—not just a presentation. You’ll engage with study findings\, practical tools\, and peer discussion. \n\nDetailed Study Findings (Understanding Current Practice)\nTool and Resource Exchange (Learning from Peers)\nGroup Discussion (Identifying Common Challenges and Solutions)\n\nParticipants will have opportunities to share assessment tools\, workflows\, resources\, and lessons learned from their own programs. \nWho Should Attend\n\nAYA program leaders and coordinators \nOncologists\, nurses\, social workers\, psychologists\, navigators\, counselors\nResearchers studying AYA or psychosocial care\nAdvocates and nonprofit leaders
