Support Starter Kit FAQ

How the Program Works

How does the kit subscription work?

The Support Starter Kit includes four deliveries over several months.

Delivery 1 – Welcome Kit
Sent to the patient and their invited supporters to introduce the program and provide tools for showing up with empathy and confidence.

Delivery 2–4 – Themed Connection Kits
Delivered every other month. For each themed kit, the patient selects one supporter to share the experience with. Both the patient and the selected supporter receive a coordinated kit designed to foster connection.

Each kit includes activities, affirmations, prompts, and resources designed to help people stay connected during treatment.

What’s included in the kits?

Each delivery includes thoughtfully curated resources and activities designed to encourage connection between patients and supporters.

Kits may include:

  • Shared activities
  • Conversation prompts
  • Affirmations
  • Practical guidance for supporters
  • Reflection exercises

Each kit is designed to be something the patient and supporter can enjoy side-by-side or from a distance.

What happens after all kits are delivered?

The Support Starter Kit subscription includes four deliveries total: the Welcome Kit followed by three themed connection kits delivered every other month.

While the kit program ends after the fourth delivery, the goal is to help patients and supporters build habits of connection that continue beyond the program.

Participants are encouraged to keep using the activities and ideas from the kits to stay connected in ways that feel meaningful and manageable.

You can also explore additional resources from b-present, including guides, articles, and tools designed to support young adults and their support communities.

How much does it cost?

The kits are no cost thanks to support from donors, sponsors, and community partners.

What information is needed to sign up?

The brief sign up form information is located here

Eligibility

Who is eligible to receive the kits?

To qualify, the patient must:

  • Be 18–39 years old
  • Live in the United States
  • Be newly diagnosed (within the last 6 months) or currently in active treatment
  • Be able to read and understand English (kits are currently English-only)

As part of the signup process, we request contact information for a health professional to confirm eligibility if required.

For Health Professionals

How can I help a patient sign up?

You can refer a patient through our website.

Once eligibility is verified, you will be redirected to a short sign up form to complete and submit on behalf of the patient.  You will receive a confirmation email, and the patient will receive a welcome message.  Their Welcome Kit will be prepared for shipment within 2 weeks of confirmed signup.

What if the patient signs up first?

If the patient completes the form first, and you were the listed health professional, you should have received a notification that they signed up for the support starter kit program. If another health professional was listed, we will reach out to coordinate shipment and resolve any duplicate application concerns.

What information is required from me?

You will be asked to verify patient eligibility and then be redirected to the signup form. In addition to the patient’s information, you’ll be asked to provide your name, work email, and phone number. You can preview the questionnaire here or a more detailed version can be found here. No medical records or sensitive health data are requested.

For Patients

What happens after the signup form is submitted?

After eligibility is confirmed, the patient will receive a welcome message and the Welcome Kit will be prepared for shipment.

If supporters were invited, they will receive an email asking them to confirm their mailing address before their Welcome Kit is shipped.

The patient will later receive reminders to confirm their address and select a supporter for each of the three themed connection kits.

Can the patient invite friends or family to participate?

Yes.

Patients can invite up to three supporters to be part of their support squad.

Supporters may include friends, family members, partners, coworkers, or chosen family.

What if the patient doesn’t want to invite supporters right now?

That’s completely okay.

The patient can still sign up for the Support Starter Kit even if they’re not ready to invite supporters yet. Their Welcome Kit will be sent directly to them, and they can choose to invite supporters later if and when it feels right.

When the themed connection kits are sent, they’ll have the opportunity to select a supporter at that time, or continue receiving the kits on their own.

The program is designed to be flexible and supportive, so they can move at their own pace.

What if the patient is not sure who to invite as a supporter?

That’s completely normal.

Many people feel unsure about who to invite, especially soon after a diagnosis. The program is designed to be flexible and low-pressure, so they can move at their own pace.

The patient can start with one or two supporters, or invite others later when the themed connection kits are sent.

Even inviting one supporter can make a meaningful difference.

Should the patient tell their invited supporters to expect an email?

Yes, that is highly recommended.

After they invite supporters through the sign-up form, supporters will receive an email from b-present Foundation asking them to confirm their mailing address so their Welcome Kit can be shipped.

Because these emails are sometimes filtered into spam or promotions folders, many patients choose to give their supporters a quick heads-up that an email is coming.

Something simple like this works well:

“I signed up for a program called the Support Starter Kit through b-present. You should get an email asking you to confirm your mailing address so they can send you a kit.”

If a supporter doesn’t respond right away, don’t worry. The patient can choose a different supporter later when the themed connection kits are being prepared.

What if the patient entered the wrong supporter email?

No problem — mistakes happen.

If a supporter’s email address was entered incorrectly, the patient can contact our team at [email protected], and we’ll help update the information.

If the incorrect email was entered before the supporter confirmed their address, we can send a new invitation to the correct email address.

What happens if an invited supporter doesn’t respond to the invite?

If a supporter doesn’t respond to the invite email by confirming their mailing address, they will not receive the Welcome Kit.

This sometimes happens if the email goes to spam or gets overlooked. Patients are encouraged to let their supporters know to watch for the invitation email.

If a supporter still doesn’t respond, the patient can:

  • Invite a different supporter
  • Continue in the program without that supporter
  • Choose a supporter later when the themed kits are sent
How many kits will invited supporters receive?

Invited supporters who confirm their mailing address will receive the Welcome Kit.

After that, the patient selects one supporter for each of the three themed connection kits delivered later in the program.

This means not every supporter receives every kit. The patient chooses which supporter participates in each themed kit.

Can the patient change which supporter receives each themed kit?

Yes.

Before each themed kit ships, the patient will receive a reminder to confirm their address and select the supporter they would like to participate in that delivery.

Patients may choose the same supporter for multiple kits or different supporters for each one.

What if the patient's mailing address or contact info changes?

Before each kit ships, the patient will receive a reminder to confirm or update their mailing address to ensure successful delivery.

Important Note: If the patient’s email or other contact info changes, please notify the b-present team at [email protected] as soon as possible. Without correct contact information, we have no way to reach the patient or provide additional kits.

Is the b-there app required?

No. The program can be completed entirely through email communication.

The b-there app is optional and may be used for organizing support and coordinating activities, like those offered through the themed kits.

For Supporters

What does it mean if a supporter receives an email invitation?

It means the patient has invited that person to be part of their support squad during treatment.

Supporters are asked to confirm their mailing address so their Welcome Kit can be shipped.

Later in the program, the patient may select that supporter to receive a themed connection kit to explore together.

Do supporters need to sign up themselvers?

No.

Supporters do not need to sign up for the program. The patient enrolls and invites supporters.

Supporters simply confirm their mailing address so their kit can be shipped.

Why do supporters have to confirm their mailing address?

To protect privacy and ensure accurate delivery, supporters are asked to confirm their own mailing address before their Welcome Kit can be shipped.

This helps ensure the package is sent to the correct location and allows supporters to share their information directly.

Can a supporter be selected to receive more than one kit?

Yes.

The patient may choose the same supporter or different supporters for each of the three themed connection kits.

Why didn't all supporters receive every kit?

Everyone who confirms their address receives the Welcome Kit.

For the remaining three themed kits, the patient selects one supporter at a time to share the experience with.

This allows patients to create intentional moments of connection with different supporters.

What happens if an invited supporter doesn't respond to the invite?

If the address confirmation form isn’t completed, we won’t be able to ship the Welcome Kit or any future kits.

Sometimes the invitation email goes to spam, so patients are encouraged to let supporters know to watch for it.

Supporters can still be selected for a future themed kit later in the program once the address is confirmed by the supporter.

Is there any cost for supporters?

No. Kits are completely free for both the patient and the supporters, thanks to funding from donors and sponsors.

Is the b-there app required for supporters?

No. Participation does not require the app.

Supporters can receive updates and instructions via email, and can participate in the connection activities without downloading the app.
