A Message From the CEO: Wishing You Presence, Joy and Hope This Holiday Season

It is hard to believe the holiday season is upon us! I hope you are all able to enjoy and celebrate the important people in your life and are taking every opportunity to experience the value of presence over presents during our #GiftPresence campaign. Let’s also b-aware that many young adults have to redefine what the holidays mean for them this year. Some are in the midst of a cancer battle as patient or caregiver, some are survivors readjusting to life beyond treatment, and some are bereaved friends or family members still trying to figure out what “celebrating the holidays” even means without their loved one there. I encourage you to find ways to #GiftPresence that give them comfort, hope and joy during their new version of “the holidays.”

In addition to our #GiftPresence hashtag, please also consider using #MyHolidays and share your redefined holiday story to let those having to reinvent their holidays know that they are not alone. Special thanks to Vivian Nunez, young adult founder of Too Damn Young, for creating this empowering campaign and holiday reminder.

As we approach the end of 2019, I want to say THANK YOU to our family and friends who have stood by us, donated their precious resources, volunteered their time, and inspired us to keep going. I am so proud of what we have accomplished this year, and know it is 100% because of all of you that we are moving forward and up. We are better with you and stronger together.

Wishing you a season of PRESENCE, JOY and HOPE and looking forward to an amazing 2020!

With Love and Endless Appreciation,

Abby

A Message From the CEO: Astellas Oncology C3 Prize Live Pitch Event Recap

On October 25, 2019, I had an amazing time participating in the Fourth Annual C3 Prize Live Pitch Event in New York City. I was there representing the b-present Foundation as the winner of the first-ever Emerging Ideas Prize for our b-there online patient/supporter connection tool. It was an honor to be on the same stage with the three finalists competing for the Grand Prize and Innovation prizes.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

The C3 Prize funds innovative non-treatment ideas to improve cancer care. This was a record-breaking year, with nearly 250 proposals from all over the world. To be one of four finalists selected amongst such a large group of high-quality ideas was so validating for us! We have been working hard on the b-there tool over the last year, and this is just the boost we needed to help us get to the next level. It is empowering to have Astellas Oncology and C3 Prize stand behind our ideas and innovations and reassures us that we can make a difference in cancer care and turn a difficult experience into a positive one for others.

BETTER TOGETHER

The night before the live pitch event, I had the pleasure of meeting and having dinner with the three finalists for the Grand Prize category. Although we were all feeling the pressure of the next day’s activities, we also felt the calm that comes with knowing that changing cancer care is bigger than all of us, and we are all in this together.

Prior to the live pitch event, we had the unique opportunity to be coached by C3 Prize partner TEDMED. Each finalist had their own amazing story to tell, sharing their connection to their idea. I think we can all agree that working with TEDMED was an incredible learning and growth experience bringing those stories to life.

AND THE WINNER IS…

Congratulations to the Grand Prize winner, Nanny Angel Network, an organization focused on providing “Nanny Angels” to care for children whose mothers have cancer, providing stability, normalcy, and support during this challenging time.

And congratulations to the two Innovation winners, ARCHES Technology and Will2Love. ARCHES Technology was recognized for its digital education and engagement program, MyCareCompass, which provides relevant information and education to people impacted by cancer throughout their treatment journey. Will2Love was recognized for providing education and expert guidance on reproductive health to help people impacted by cancer manage their sexual health and fertility.

I am so grateful to Astellas Oncology, the C3 Prize team, the judges, TEDMED, and all of the finalists for making this the experience of a lifetime. I left inspired and energized, and can’t wait to see what the future holds as we make b-there the tool that brings normalcy back to the lives of young adults with cancer.

The best is yet to come!

A Note From Our CEO — What It Means To Be An Astellas C3 Prize Emerging Ideas Semi-Finalist

A few weeks ago, b-present shared the exciting news that our organization was selected as an Astellas C3 Prize Emerging Ideas semi-finalist. I admit I was in tears when I read the email, first scanning through quickly and then re-reading to confirm the good news. I felt a rush of various emotions and thoughts, but the most powerful was that we, b-present, are one step closer to bringing Kirsten’s full vision to life. This award nomination truly validates and has the potential to strengthen our vision to transform her struggle into positive change for other young adult cancer patients. Honored and humbled to be featured as a semi-finalist among such prestigious peers in the cancer care space, I sat with disbelief as I realized Astellas was giving us the opportunity to significantly further our impact. For a recently established nonprofit, founded by passionate volunteers committed to strengthening the young adult cancer patient support network, the recognition of our b-there tool as an important solution for improving cancer care was incredibly rewarding.

I applaud the Astellas C3 Prize Team for helping the cancer community innovate and bring meaningful ideas to fruition. They recognize the importance of improving the patient experience, and understand that often the best ideas come from those that have first-hand experience —  as patients or supporters. We are grateful to be considered for this incredible opportunity to help Change Cancer Care, and look forward to hearing the final results soon. We are excited to be part of a community that seeks to innovate and change care for the better, and are wishing the best of luck to all semi-finalists; we’re all in this together.

b-there User Community Review Underway

In June, b-present Foundation met with two cancer support groups to seek volunteer evaluators for our b-there online connection and support tool. First, we met with San Diego Rady Children’s Hospital Some of My Best Friends are Bald (SOMBFAB).

The following week we visited Stanford to meet with the Adolescent and Young Adult Patient & Family Advisory Council (SAYAC PFAC).

We are excited to have 12 volunteers so far! Our goal is to get input from a representative cross-section of users (cancer survivor peer groups, supporters, medical professionals, and the research community). It is only with this diversity of perspectives that we can ensure we have created a tool that meets the needs of the community we are trying to serve in the best way possible.

We are conducting the tool review in two phases:

Phase One: Our first review of the tool will focus on design, features, and ease of use of the prototype tool. On July 12, packets were distributed to our volunteer evaluators, and responses will be coming in over the next two months. After this first phase of testing, we will have a user workshop to discuss the findings and prioritize updates.

Phase Two: After the recommended software changes are implemented and validated, we will conduct our second phase of the review process. During this phase, volunteers will evaluate the utility and impact of the updated tool on overall patient/supporter interactions, connection, and support.

User input is important to us, and we are looking forward to what the community has to say. If you are a cancer survivor, supporter, researcher or medical professional interested in receiving more information or being an evaluator, please contact us. Thank you for your interest and your support.

Stay tuned! We will provide another update when our first phase review is complete.
